'Combat between the Ojibwas and the Sacs and Foxes, Lake Superior', 1847.

Engraving by C E Wagstaff and J Andrews after Captain Seth Eastman, US Army. Ojibwa or Chippewa warriors are fighting against the Sac (or Sauk) and Fox on Lake Superior, between the USA and Canada. There were frequent wars between these tribes over possession of fields of wild rice in the region. The population of the Americas was drastically reduced after the arrival of the Europeans due to war, disease, forced removal and relocation, and the destruction of traditional ways of life. Illustration from 'Information respecting the history, condition and prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States. Part 2' by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), published in Philadelphia in 1847.
